Lesson of the Week

Evolve and Elevate: Three Gunas that decide your Karma

Bhagavad Gita says:

What is Bhautik Prakriti (Physical world)?

You and the World you reside in makes the Bhautik Jagat/Bhautik Prakriti (Physical world).

In the Bhagavad Gita, Physical world is called Apara in nature (the external world which can be experienced by the senses {sight, hearing, touch taste}).

And the creature is called Para in nature (the inner or spiritual world).

Whether Bhautik Prakriti (Physical world) is Para or Apara, it is always under the control of God.

Nature always exists under the power of God as God is the only Controller.

Creatures as well as the Physical world, are controlled by God.

As per Bhagavad Gita, all the creatures are a part of God.

God says, this Bhautik Prakriti (Physical world) is my Apara Prakriti (external, superficial) but there is a different Prakriti too which is Jeev (creature) who is Para (internal, deeper).

Bhautik Prakriti (Physical world) has three types of Gunas (attributes):

  • Sato Guna: light, bliss, goodness
  • Rajo Guna: passion, motion
  • Tamo Guna: inertia, darkness

There are three Vrittis in the mind corresponding to the three Gunas. Santa Vritti (peace) comes out of Sato Guna, Ghora Vritti from Rajo Guna and Mudha Vritti from Tamo Guna.

Equilibrium or balance is Santa Vritti; anger is Ghora Vritti; laziness (Alasya), carelessness (Pramada) and drowsiness (Tandri) are Mudha Vrittis.

Above these Gunas stand the Nitya kaal (the never-ending time).

And with the coordination and control of all these Gunas (attributes) and Nitya Kal (time), all the activities of a creature are carried out, which are then called as Karma.

These Karmas are being carried out from Anadi kal (a time that is so old that its starting point cannot be traced) and we all according to these Karmas are receiving Dukh (misery) or Sukh (Joy).

Bhagavad Gita explains about God, Jeev (creatures), Prakriti (Physical world), Kal (Time) and Karma.

Out of these 5, God, Jeev (creature), Prakriti (Physical world) and Kal (time) are Shashvat (Eternal, lasting forever).

Bhautik Prakriti (Physical world) can be temporary, but it is created again. It stays for a certain period and then it destroys.

But this cycle of emergence of Prakriti (Physical world) and its destruction is a continuous process. Hence, Prakriti (Physical world) is permanent.

Whereas God, Jeev (creature) and Kal (Time) are ongoing and permanent.

Jeev (creature) is a soul that never dies.

God says, it’s my Prakriti (My physical world).

The Bhagavad Gita says, This Bhautik Prakriti (Physical world) is God’s Bhinn Shakti (the one that is separated from God).

In the same way, Jeev (creature) is also God’s Shakti (Power) but it is not separated from God. It is in close association/everlasting bond with God.

God, Jeev, Prakriti and time are all related to each other, and all are Shashvat (permanent).

But the 5th one, the Karma is not permanent.

The effects of Karma can be very old.

We have suffered or enjoyed the results of our Karmas (the good and bad accordingly) from the earliest times but along with this, we can also change the results of these Karmas.

And this transformation of Karma depends entirely on the completeness of our wisdom and knowledge.

We are busy doing different types of Karmas, but we are unaware of which of the Karmas can set us free from Karama consequences.

And it is all explained in the Bhagavad Gita.

Inspiration of the Week:

You are going to receive more as you grow older.

Someone telling you, “You look quite old” never feels good to the ears.

And at the same time, someone saying, “You look quite young” widens your smile.

Mine too 🤗

Ageing has always been looked down upon as a sign of losing the spark, the charm, the attraction and also the confidence.

I remember when I was a kid, one of my neighbors whom we called Uncle was married to a pretty wife. All the children in the neighborhood called his wife “Aunty” which she did not like but never expressed.

And on one fine day, Uncle came to tell us all to not call his wife Aunty.

We all stood confused.

Were we supposed to call her Didi (sister) then?

We could not understand her pain back then.

Though I don’t remember any of us calling her Didi post Uncle’s suggestion too.

But this is how the majority of people react to ageing which somehow is Unhealthy.

The white hair and fine lines that begin to pop up with age are enough to not embrace ageing with wide arms.

The very first sign of getting older is seen on a physical level.

And we are crushed by the fact, the youth that we had been flaunting for years is now declining.

We see the downfall in our physical beauty, and we begin to feel less in ourselves.

But there is something that grows with growing older.

Something that we might not see from the get-go or maybe because we are trapped in the pain of our declining physical beauty, we fail to see things we are gaining.

As they say, Old is Gold.

Indeed, it is!

But Gold does not come without a price. You have to sacrifice the youth to welcome the Golden old age and also build an understanding to identify the gold nuggets coming your way.

I have been adorning my ageing for plenty of reasons.

I see myself in a better plane of thoughts and have started to see life through a clearer lens.

Yes, a few white strands and less youthful skin is the price that I’m paying but it’s worth the treasures I am receiving.

  • I started to look inwards, which is my permanence, where lies the eternal bliss. When I was younger, my attention was on the outside, where everything was temporary. With age and with experience, I retreated from the descent and made the Awakening ascent. The World is not to dwell in, it is only there for your needs. Only when you start dwelling in your inner realm, everything you receive from outside is a bonus because you have found happiness in nothingness.
  • I wanted people to change and be nicer and humble. I always wanted people to treat me nicely and the way I wanted. But now when I’m getting older, I feel I have got armor to shield myself. I am no longer affected by how the world is, What I am concerned about is, how better I can be to the world. I have realized world changes when you show them the change you want in them.
  • I would react to situations that wouldn’t work out. I would be in a complete mess when things would go haywire. I would let the situation trouble my inner peace making the situation give all power to control me. And now I don’t interfere with what I don’t have control over. I try to smile, and I keep calm no matter how bad it turns. I keep my inside separate from the outside.
  • I am learning how to respond intelligently and unemotionally to unintelligent and emotional treatment.

The wisdom gained with age serves as a barrier that does not let the blood boil in response to any outside situation.
